HOW DOES ART IMPACT HEALTH?
Making an existential difference
Art has always been cherished for the emotional reactions it inspires. Recent research now confirms that experiencing original art not only stirs various emotions but also enhances and supports mental and long-term physical well-being.
And there is scientific proof...

In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO)* examined over 3,500 studies on the impact of the arts on health and wellbeing. Following this review, officially released guidelines - published by the WHO - are urging countries to incorporate the arts into their healthcare strategies and enhance cooperation between the health and cultural sectors.

BIOPHILIC MOTIVES AS VISUAL MEDICINE?
Bearing this in mind, when visitors browse through my biophilic illustrations, they aren’t just looking at art... they are truly engaging in a micro-session of “attention restoration.” By weaving e.g. fauna and flora into structured, ornamental compositions, I aim to provide a visual connection with nature. These pieces of art serve as a refuge for the digitally fatigued - a space where viewers can pause, breathe, and reconnect with the living systems that sustain us. - For instance:
-
Fractal Patterns: Nature is built on fractals - patterns that repeat at different scales. Some of my artwork features detailed botanical veins or sprawling root systems, which means I am tapping into a geometry that the human brain processes with ease, inducing a state of “effortless fascination".
-
Biomorphic Forms: The use of organic, curved lines instead of rigid right angles mimics the shapes of living organisms. This fosters a sense of “soft fascination,” helping to clear the mental fatigue since it feels deeply familiar and instinctively calming.

Even the sole act of observing art can positively impact your health. Research conducted by Daisy Fancourt*, a professor of psychobiology and epidemiology at the University College London, reveals that participating in art-related activities, such as visiting museums or galleries, can already alleviate stress symptoms and bring mental relief.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, PROGRAMS & INITIATIVES

This research project seeks to explore how arts engagement contributes to the mental health of young people, with the goal of creating a technical brief to inform policy. Programs centered around the arts can foster healthy youth development by enhancing problem-solving, social skills, and a sense of purpose, while also mitigating feelings of isolation and loneliness.

The most comprehensive study of its kind, aimed at examining the effects of hospital murals on patients, staff, and visitors, while also analyzing murals in various cultural settings in Nigeria, Slovenia, the UK, and the US.
Lead: Jameel Arts & Health Lab, NYU Steinhardt*

This systematic review, fueled by increasing global interest from researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the arts and health fields, will consolidate findings from over 150 large-scale studies. It aims to illustrate and quantify the connection between arts engagement and population health, tackling questions that extend beyond experimental research and guiding future public health initiatives.
